To what extent does the general public endorse language myths?

This paper reports on an investigation of adults' level endorsement 18 language myths, including myths about non-mainstream dialects English, children's development, bilingualism, linguistic diversity across the world, use English in arts, and job a linguist. Participants (N = 187) read short vignettes situations related to each misconception were asked justify their assessment situation. Responses coded according whether they endorsed myth within Results showed that was highly dependent specific myth. Some strongly (e.g. prejudice development), others rejected harmful nature bilingualism), received mixed pattern rejection. We discuss how this snapshot public understanding can help linguists target efforts at education.
